Parent Visas - Visa Requirements

Temporary Sponsored Parent Visa

This visa type is suitable for any person who has children in Australia who are Australian citizens, Permanent Residents or an eligible New Zealand citizen.

Balance of family test is NOT required.

The applicant must have an approved sponsor and must meet the health and character requirements.

    Sponsorship requirements:
  • at least 18 years old.
  • be the biological, adoptive, or step child of the parent, may also include the parent of a deceased spouse or defacto parent.
  • be an Australian citizens, PR or eligible New Zealand citizen and not be an ineligible sponsor.
  • only sponsor two parents at any one time.
  • have a minimum household taxable income threshold of $83,454.80.
  • have no debts to the Commonwealth or outstanding public health debts.

Contributory Parent Visa

This visa type is suitable for any person either inside or outside Australia who has children in Australia who are Australian citizens or Permanent Residents and are willing to contribute an extra application fee to cover possible health costs and to have the visa application processed faster than non-contributory parent visa applications.

The applicant must have a sponsor and must meet the health and character requirements.

    The applicant must meet the balance of the family test:
  • At least half of the applicant's children are settled in Australia, OR
  • The applicant has more children settled in Australia that any single overseas country;
  • All children, including step children and adopted children will be included in the Balance of Family Test.

Aged Parent Visa

This visa type is suitable for any person inside Australia who is old enough to be granted an Australian aged pension and who has children in Australia who are Australian citizens or Permanent Residents.

The applicant must have a sponsor and must meet the health and character requirements.

    The applicant must be 'aged', that is old enough to receive an aged pension:
  • In Australia, this requires males generally to be aged 65 years and over, and females generally to be aged 63 years and older.
    The applicant must meet the balance of the family test:
  • At least half of the applicant's children are settled in Australia, OR
  • The applicant has more children settled in Australia that any single overseas country;
  • All children, including step children and adopted children will be included in the Balance of Family Test.

Parent Visa

This visa type is suitable for any person outside Australia who has children in Australia who are Australian citizens or Permanent Residents.

The applicant must have a sponsor and must meet the health and character requirements.

    The applicant must meet the balance of the family test:
