Australia skilled migration program is designed to target people who have the skills to contribute to the Australian economy. There are two major types: independent visa those you acquire based on your qualifications and education, this usually requires a points test and the sponsored visa those you get via state territory nomination or through an Australian relative.

The beauty of getting a skilled sponsored visa is you do not need to pass the points test. However, before you can be sponsored by a relative in Australia, they need to meet certain criteria as well.

It is also important to note, that sponsorship alone or state nomination alone cannot be the basis of being granted a visa for Australia. The applicant needs to fulfill certain requirements as well.

People applying for general skilled migration visa will need to meet the following.
1. Under the age of 45 at the time of application
2. Be eligible for an occupation listed in the SOL
3. Have their skills asses by a relevant authority to be deemed suitable for the occupation.
4. Have good level of English language ability
5. Have recent work experience related to the occupation or complete Australian qualifications by completing 2 years of study in Australia.

There are several subclasses within this subcategory and they are based on your location and visa type

1. Offshore Permanent – Skilled Sponsored or Subclass 178 is for skilled applicants outside Australia
2. Onshore New Zealand Citizen Subclass 444
3. Offshore Provisional Skilled Regional Sponsored or Subclass 475 is for those with eligible relatives living in designated areas of Australia
4. Onshore Permanent
Skilled Sponsored or Subclass 886 is for overseas students who have been studying in Australia for the last six months or Graduate (subclass 485) or Recognised Graduate (subclass 476) visa holders
Skilled Regional Sponsored (Provisional) subclass 475 and 487 have specific residence and work requirements.
5. Onshore provisional Skilled Regional Sponsored or Subclass 487 is also applicable for skilled applicants who are currently residing in Australia.
