Australian work-travel privilege: Subclass 417 visa information

  • Sharebar

Australia recognises the need for young people to earn while they travel and therefore offer the Working Holiday or Subclass 417 visa to eligible applicants.

The usefulness of this visa has been proven during the 2008 financial crisis, which drove foreigners from affected countries Down Under in order to find employment and experience the country’s beauty at the same time. Now, the working holiday Australia visa is a popular visa program, and the Australian government has even set a limitless cap on the scheme in order to support further inbound tourism.

Here is some helpful information about the 417 visa for intending migrants:

Function

The purpose of Subclass 417 is to allow young adults aged 18 to 30 to travel and work in Australia for a period of one year. Details are:

  • visa holders can stay in Australia for one year after visa grant
  • visa holders can leave and re-enter Australia as long as the visa is valid
  • visa holders can study for up to four months
  • visa holders can work for only six month per employer
  • visa holders can extend their stay upon meeting a number of requirements

The last condition is one of the complicated aspects of this visa that often requires expert assistance. Applicants can communicate with National Visas’ registered migration agents in order to determine if they qualify for a second working holiday visa.

Target

Australia’s working holiday visa program forms part of a reciprocal agreement with partner countries. These countries have signed a treaty with the Australian government to allow a certain number of their citizens to travel and work in Australia under the agreed conditions, in turn allowing eligible Australians to have the same privileges in their countries.

The countries that participate in the Working Holiday Maker program include: Belgium, Canada, Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong (China), Ireland, Italy, Japan, Korea, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Taiwan, the United States, and the United Kingdom. It also noteworthy that some other countries (such as the USA) are catered for on a similar work and holiday (subclass 462) visa to Australia.

It must be noted that visa conditions are agreed between Australia and each partner country. This means that conditions that apply to one partner does not apply to others. Hence, it is a wise decision to consult with expert migration agents in applying for this visa.

Cost and processing time

The cost of a 417 visa application varies, but there are standard government and non-government charges that must be paid. To serve as an illustration, a first working holiday visa application lodged outside Australia will have the following basic costs:

  • AU$420 for the visa application charge
  • AU$350 (approximately) for medical examination (not always required)

It is possible that additional costs may be incurred in some limited circumstances; for example, if you have a criminal conviction, you may need to provide some further documents/evidence.

Processing time varies due to the number of applications received, but migration firms may provide a tentative processing time of one working day for a standard case with no “health or character” issues.
