Australia, with its stable economy and with the boom of its mining industry, has become a preferred work destination for skilled workers.

With its local labor market threatened with shortages, the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) has made major changes into its General Skilled Migration Program to answer the ongoing local labor shortage.

This July 1, 2011, a new points test for skilled migrants will come into effect.

For most Australian skilled visa, applications will now be assessed against a points test. The point test is designed to select the best and brightest Australia skilled visa applicants who have characteristics that will help them find a full time job in an occupation that matches their skills and is required in Australia and who will make the optimum economic contribution to Australia.

Under the point test system, points can be claim under a range of different factors namely:

better English levels

more extensive skilled employment

higher level qualifications obtained in Australia and overseas

better targeted age ranges

What are Pass and Pool Marks?
A pass mark and a pool mark are set for each of the points–tested visas in the General Skilled Migration category.
The pass mark is the total amount of points needed to score to be eligible for grant of a visa.
The pool mark is the minimum number of points a skilled visa applicant must score in order for their visa application to be held in reserve.
How does it Work?
The Australia immigration only assessed applicants against the pass mark and pool that is in effect at the time a decision is made on the application of the following point tested skilled visas:

The Australia visa applicant must reach the pass mark that is in effect on the day of the lodging of the application for the application to proceed.

If they do not achieve the pass mark, but have reached above the ‘pool mark’, their application will be held ‘in the pool’ or in reserve for up to two years after it is assessed.

Changes to the pass mark may occur from time to time to address Australian labor market needs. So if the pass mark is lowered at any time in that two year period, and the skilled visa applicant’s score is equal to or higher than the new pass mark, then their application will be processed further by the Australian immigration.

However, if during this 2 year period, the visa applicant is still unable to reach the pass mark, their application will be refused.

Skilled visa applicants must check first the current pass mark immediately before making an application.

Other Skilled Visa Alternatives for Failing Pass Marks
A Skilled visa applicant can also have the option to consider the following visa options if they do not meet the pass mark and are not willing to wait in the pool:

scored 100 points – may be eligible for a Skilled – Sponsored (Migrant) visa (subclass 176) or a Skilled – Regional Sponsored (Provisional) visa (subclass 475) visa.

met the pool mark for the Skilled – Independent (Migrant) visa (Subclass 175) – can still lodge and register for the Skill Matching Database

This means that anyone from any country can apply visa for Australia regardless of their ethnic origin, gender, color, or religious affiliation provided that they meet the criteria set out in law.

Annually, Australia is said to have more than 120 000 migrants. In 2009, the estimated Net Migration Rate is said to be 6.23 migrants per 1,000 population. In 2009–10, Australia’s migration program outcomes have reached around 182,400 as recorded by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship. Each year, Australia has recorded more than five million visitors.

If you are planning to get an Australia visa application, do read the tips below to guide you on your visa to Australia application process:

Having a Universal Visa system, all non-citizens except New Zealanders are required to get an Australia visa in order to enter Australia.

The Australia immigration selects migrants under the Migration Program in three streams namely Skill, Family and Special Eligibility and Humanitarian. However today, the Australia immigration policy emphasizes on boosting skills and business skills intakes.

All visa Australia applications are assessed for eligibility against requirements set out in the Migration Act and Regulations which can change frequently in accordance to legislative amendments and Federal and High Court precedents.

There are different categories of visas and each visa has its own conditions and criteria. Remember, be sure to apply for the RIGHT category of visa for if your application is rejected, you will not be refunded of your application fee.

Visa applications are selected on the basis of such factors as relationship to an Australian permanent resident or citizen, skills, age, qualifications, capital and business expertise. Also migrants must also meet the health and character requirements specified by migration legislation.

If your visa application is rejected and you have an Australian sponsoring interest, you can make an appeal from the independent Migration Review Tribunal (MRT) in Australia. An appeal to the Federal and High Courts is also possible. Though these two applications for review are separate from the visa application itself, it has its own separate fee and application deadline though if the appeal wins, your fees will be refunded. Both applications for review also usually require legal representation.

If you want a smooth and easy visa application process, you can engage the services of a good professional Registered Migration Agent from any of the leading Australia immigration services provider like National Visas.

Be responsible in engaging the right Registered Migration Agent. Remember there are many unscrupulous migrant agents who will easily take advantage of your situation. Be alert and research properly the agent and provider you are going to hire.

A good migration agent can help in selecting the best and right visa application for your situation, help you prepare all the visa requirements with all necessary evidence and help you lodge and represent in your behalf your visa application.

Remember, Registered Migration Agents cannot ‘guarantee’ approval of your visa application for they are NOT Immigration officials.

With this in mind, be wary of migration assistance contract containing a financial ‘guarantee’ for there are migration operators out there who use trickery and confusing contracts that deceive their clients into thinking that their application fee is refundable if rejected though it is not. Do not believe in ‘no visa, no fee’ or ‘money-back guarantee’ offers.

With its stable economy, breathtaking scenic spots and friendly and accommodating atmosphere, it’s no wonder Australia has become a favored destination for people seeking adventure and work.

Migrants, may it be students, tourists and skilled workers alike, must undergo the Australia visa application process before they can gain entry to Australia.

The Australia visa application process may take several weeks. However, many visa to Australia immigration visa services providers such as National Visas, in accordance to the guidelines set by the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship, has broken down these steps to make it simpler and easier for visa for Australia applicants to follow.

Lodging your visa application can be done by submitting personally your visa requirements and application to the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship or online with the assistance of experienced Australia immigration visa services provider.

There are a wide range of Australia immigration visas that a visa applicant can apply for, from short-term student visas to long-term work visas. Though visa Australia application process has similarities for all types of visas; however, there are 5 basic steps to follow with sub-steps under each visa categories.

Choose and Assess Your Visa Eligibility Online. You can determine what visa you can apply for by taking the free online visa assessment given by a wide variety of Australian immigration visa services providers on the internet. This free Online Assessment, developed by experienced immigration professionals, incorporates criteria specified by the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC). It is designed to instantly determine a visa applicant’s eligibility to apply for a visa to Australia.

Prepare Your Visa application Requirements. After determining the type of visa category and passing the online assessment, you can now prepare the necessary visa requirements that are needed for your visa application.

Fill Up and Lodge Your Visa Application. Download or completely fill up a visa application form from the Department of Immigration and Citizenship online. Attach all supporting documents to your visa application and sign all necessary spaces that require your signature. Also include a copy of your passport and the appropriate visa fee. Please remember, to fill up the visa application forms completely and properly, so that your visa application will not be delayed due to incomplete data.

For work visa applicants, send evidence of your job skills to the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship such as school transcripts, diplomas and work references as proof.

For student visa applicants, you must register for Overseas Student Health Cover for the duration of your intended stay in Australia. Evidence of registration must be provided when you file your visa application.

If the Australian government asks you to do so and the visa requires, you must attend a health examination with a panel doctor. The doctor will be the one to send your results to the Australian authorities for final visa approval.

Wait for your Visa Endorsement. This is the final step in your visa application process. A period of up to 10 months will be given to you to enter into Australia once your visa has been endorsed.

Take note that some Australian visas do not require any visa label endorsement on your passport and you can enter Australia by just showing your passport to the border security officials in Australia.
