<g:plusone size="tall" count="1" href="http://www.nationalvisas.com.au/blog/student-visas/international-student-entry-requirements-for-australia/"></g:plusone>

A lot of schools and universities in Australia have been the desired destination of many students from various parts of the world. Who would not when not only the country is very conducive for learning but encourages a better and healthy lifestyle as well? The nature of Australia is very rich that the country has clean air, rich in vitamin-enriched food, and has plenty of opportunities for people to do fitness exercises because of the friendly environment.

Due to the great number of students who are interested in studying Australia, a lot of students have been applying for an Australian student visa. The assessment level for students applying for an Australia student visa depends on the passport country and the course or courses that the student wishes to take up. There is also a Student visa subclass wherein the student applicant will be assessed by the main course of the study.

For the student visa subclass, there are a lot of options available. This includes the English Language Intensive Course for Overseas Students, otherwise known as the ELICOS, the primary or secondary school course, the vocational education and training, higher education, postgraduate research, non-award, AusAID and Defence which applies to students undertaking full-time courses of any type and are sponsored by the Australian Department of Defence, and the student guardians or those applications applied for by parents or relatives who are to stand as a guardian of a student who is studying in Australia.

There are various requirements that a student applicant has to meet in applying for an Australia student visa. For one, the selected course that the applicant wishes to study should be a registered one by an Australian education institution such as a university. It is also a must that the said course should be full time.

The assessment before a student is granted a Student Visa will depend on the applicant’s Passport Nationality and the type of Student Visa which is being applied for. These are the factors which are used to determine the applicant’s Assessment Levels which range between 1 to 5. The said assessment levels serve to align student visa requirements to the immigration risk which are posed by applicants of a particular country studying in a particular education sector. Assessment Level 1 represents the lowest immigration risk while Assessment Level 5 the highest. The higher Assessment Level shows that there will be greater evidence that will be required from the applicant to support the claims for the grant of a student visa.

A Student Visa is a visa which is considered to be a Temporary Student Visa which will remain valid for the whole duration of the course. After the studies have been completed, the student will be required to leave the country on the date indicated on the visa. However, the student may still be entitled to apply for another Temporary Visa or a Permanent Residence as long as the visa is not yet expired.

Holders of Temporary Student Visas are required to have an Overseas Student Health Cover or the OSHC for the whole duration of the student’s stay. This private health insurance should be paid first before the issuance of the visa and has to be renewed every year.

Aside from the time you spent in your Australian university, college or school, there is a bigger and brighter world outside the walls of your education provider.

Some students opt to extend their say beyond the eligibility of their Australian visa. There are hundreds of reasons to do this and some legal ways to stay in the country. This is especially true if you do not have a “No Further Stay” condition on your Australia visa.

Some of the more common reason for extending your stay while on a student visa is to continue your studies. Others in the higher education sector need to extend to have their PhD thesis assessed. If this is the case, then all that you need to do is to apply for a new student visa. There are different Australian visa options available for students. There are visas for English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS), primary or secondary school, vocational education and training, higher education, postgraduate research, non-award, AusAID and Defence and visas for Student Guardians.

You may also want to extend your stay to attend your graduation ceremony or simply to have a holiday. For this, you need to apply for an Australian tourist visa or a visitors visa. Others choose to extend their stay in Australia to work. This requires a workers visa. There’s a special type of visa that mixes both business and leisure and this is the working holiday visa. This allows you to stay in Australia to spend the holidays, at the same time allowing you to take on temporary work that lets you earn enough to pay for you vacation.

Finally, there are some students who want to extend their stay and become permanent residents in Australia. To do this, one must apply to become a permanent resident under the General Skilled Migration program.

The country’s student visa program has grown significantly over the last year. Over 278,000 student visas were granted in the program year 2007 to 2008, which shows a 21 percent growth from the previous year. International students from over 190 countries applied to Australia schools during that period.

The Assessment Level (ALs) makes this process easier to manage for the Australian government. Assessment Level works as an objective measure of immigration risk. There are five levels for Australian student visas. Assessment Level 1 represents the lowest immigration risk while Assessment Level 5 is the highest. Those belonging to the higher Assessment Levels are required to produce more evidence to support their intent when applying for a student visa.

Assessment Levels are based on countries and education sectors. The, in turn, is based on the group’s compliance to their visa conditions and other indicators of immigration risk from the previous year.

So, if you want to go to an Australian university or college to take up a bachelor degree by coursework that means you belong to the higher education category. You need to match your education sector to the current passport you are holding to be able to determine your Assessment Level. For 1219i shows the current Assessment Levels for all countries and all education sectors. As there is a periodic review of ALs, the Assessment Level that applies to you is also based on the date when you lodged your application for a student visa. For countries that are not currently listed on Form 1219i, this will generally fall under Assessment Level 3.

For students who intend on bringing family members with them, the family members will have the same Assessment Level as the student visa holder.

As a registered education provider for international students on an Australia student visa, the letter of offer provided must contain specific data to support the visa application. If these are not present, it may delay processing of the Australian student visa application. As such, the letter of offer must contain information on tuition fee costs – including the amount for the entire course. This is calculated by aggregating the highest estimate per semester. It should also show the course duration detailing items such as start dates, end dates and the length of the course. This should also include CRISCOS codes such as the code of the education provider and the course. All other specific conditions (such as a conditional offer of a place) must also be included in the letter of offer.

It is also the responsibility of the educational provider to monitor and report breaches of attendance and course progress. This is reported visa the Provider Registration and International Student Management System (PRISMS). The Australian student visa may be revoked if the student does not achieve satisfactory attendance or maintain satisfactory course progress. Any course withdrawal should also be properly reported to immigration authorities.

Some educational providers, such as boarding schools, provide care arrangements for students less than 18 years old. If this is the case, the educational provider must provide a signed statement confirming the period for arrangements for the student’s welfare, accommodation and support. The period nominated must match at least the duration of stated in the student’s Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) plus seven days or until the student turns 18. Any changes in the education provider’s care arrangement for Australia Student Visa holders under 18 years of age must also be reported via PRISMS.

If you have the opportunity to go to Australia before you select your future school, you should try visiting different campuses. Doing so would let you know if the university really is a fit for you.

The best time to visit the campus is when study courses in Australia are in session. Go in the middle of the day or late in the morning. Try to talk to some students to see how much they like it there. Some would even allow you to sit in a class and talk to faculty members. To make the experience as memorable as possible, you can even take your own photos of the Australian university.

Here are some questions you should ask when visiting Australian universities:

What kind of academic and extracurricular facilities do they have? How large is the library? Are the labs up-to-date?

What kind of support services do they have (ie counseling, tutoring, career planning, etc.)?

How big is the campus?

Are there residential accommodation or places where you can live close to the school?

Are there clubs, organizations, fraternities or sororities you can join?

Does it feel safe inside the campus and in the surrounding areas?

What kind of professors do they have?

What kind of teaching techniques to the professors employ?

Do the students generally look happy?

Is the school accredited?

What are the most popular academic programs offered?

Can I afford the tuition?

Are there scholarships, deferred payments, financial aids offered?

Are there jobs available on-campus?

Finally, you need to ask yourself: Is this really the Australian university I want to study in?
