Hon. Chris Bowen MP, Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, has announced recently that students who wish to study in Australia may now use their TOEFL test scores as part of their visa application.
Before, students coming to Australia from Assessment Level 3 and 4 countries such as China, India, Vietnam, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Turkey, and the Philippines have to take only one English language assessment.
With this recent announcement, all international students who wish to study in Australia and are applying for student visa Australia must take the TOEFL test.
What is the TOEFL Test?
Significant details about the TOEFL Test:
The TOEFL test is the most widely accepted English language assessment in the world.
It is recognized by more than 8,000 institutions in more than 130 countries.
It is available at more than 4,500 testing sites.
TOEFL is only available as an Internet-Based Test in Australia so it can only be taken online.
The TOEFL has three sections namely Listening Comprehension; Structure and Written Expression; and Reading Comprehension.
The Listening Comprehension section assesses the student’s ability to understand English as it is spoken in the USA and Canada.
The Structure and Written Expression section assesses your ability to recognize standard written English.
The Reading Comprehension section assesses the student’s ability to understand passages on non-technical subjects.
The recent decision to use the TOEFL test scores as part of the requirements if you apply for visa to Australia, specifically the student visa, is hoped to boost Australia’s international student recruitment efforts for Australia’s universities and colleges so that these universities and colleges will now have a chance to compete for talented international students from 165 countries taking the TOEFL test.
The new student visas to Australia requirement, the TOEFL test scores was once accepted for admission purposes only by most universities and colleges in Australia.
The said additional English language test option, that is the TOEFL test, is said to aim at helping create competition in the English language testing market, while making more test locations for student visas for Australia applicants.
The TOEFL test will also give candidates with wider choice and allow them to more speedily obtain test results needed for visa application.
Though the test results from the TOEFL test will not yet be accepted for Student visa purposes until after this process has been completed, it is expected to be in place later this year.
Equivalency scores for the TOEFL test are still being finalized and will also be announced later this year.
