Subclass 574 is designed for international students who want to acquire a Masters or a Doctoral degree by research. Your Australian student visa application will be assessed based on your Assessment Level. That in turn, is determined by your nationality and course of study.

Before you apply for Australia visas for students, it is generally required that you be accepted for full-time study in an educational institution in Australia. You need to present evidence of such in the form of a Letter of Offer of Confirmation of Enrollment.

Once granted, this student visa will let you study and stay in Australia for the duration of your course. You are also allowed to have dependents accompany you.

You and your dependents are allowed multiple entries into Australia. The duration of your visa is based on the length of your course. For courses that run 10 months or less, it is typical to be granted one month longer than the end date of your course. If your course runs for more than 10 months, your visa will usually be for two months past the end date of your course. Also, if your course ends in November or December, your visa will be valid until March 15 of the following year. Your dependent family members can stay in Australia at the same length of time as you, but they are not allowed to stay once you leave the country.

For student visas that expire before graduation, the holder needs to apply for a visitor visa and has to secure a letter from the educational institution stating the date of graduation.

This Australia student visa also allows you to take on a job. When you have commenced your course, you can work up to 20 hours per week. During your scheduled course break, you may work unlimited hours.

Your ability to work in Australia on a student visa is determined by the grant date. If it was granted before April 26, 2008, you are automatically allowed to work at the commencement of your course. If the Australian student visa was granted after the said date, you may need to apply for Permission to Work.

Unlike other student visas, the Masters and Doctorate Sector visa allows your dependent to work unlimited hours from the commencement of your course of study.
