The points test is required for most general skilled migration visa for Australia. Your Australian visa application is assessed against the points test. You can claim points under several factors.
Each visa type has its own pass mark. If you don’t meet the pass mark and pool mark. The pass marks indicates that you are eligible for a points-tested Australian visa. If you fail the pass mark, but your score is above the pool mark, it means your application will be waiting in the pool for up to two years after the first assessment.
Points for Skill
- For most occupations where training is specific to occupation – degree or trade certificate related to your nominated occupation) 60 points
- More general professional occupation – qualifications equivalent to Australian standards but not related to your nominated occupation 50 points
- Other general skilled occupation – qualifications equivalent to an Australian bachelor degree, but not specifically related to your nominated occupation 40 points
Before you lodge your application for an Australian visa, your skills must be assessed by a relevant authority as suitable to your nominated occupation.
Points for Age
18 to 29 years old 30 points
30 to 35 years old 25 points
35 to 39 years old 20 points
40 to 44 years old 15 points
As proof of your age, you should include your birth certificate, passport or other evidence with your Australia visa application.
Points for English Language Ability
- Proficient English – an IELTS score of 7 for at least 4 components 25 points
- Competent English – IELTS score of 6 on the 4 components 15 points
- Concessional Competent – IELTS band score of 5.5 15 points for Skilled – Regional Sponsored visa
- Vocational – IELTS score of at least 5 on the 4 components 15 points for nominated skilled trade occupation or 30 points in the Business Skills – Established Business Australia visa subclass
- Functional English – IELTS score of 4.5 on the 4 test components Zero for GSM or 20 points for Business Skills – Established Business Australia visa subclass
- Limited English – IELTS Score of 4 for the 4 components Zero points for GSM and 10 points for Business Skills – Established Business Australia visa subclass
- No English Zero points
You may also claim points for specific employment. For instance, if your nominated occupation is for 60 points and you are at the skilled level for 3 to 4 years, then you get 10 points. If your nominated occupation is at 40, 50 or 60 points and you have been a skilled employee at least 3 to 4 years, you can earn 5 points.
Previous employment in Australia for 12 months at least 48 months prior to your Australian visa application can also get you 10 points.
Completing education in Australia also has equivalent points. If it is for a doctorate degree, that amounts to 25 points. For an Australian Masters or Honours degree, you can claim 15 points. For an Australian degree, diploma or trade qualification, you may get 5 points.
In-demand occupations and getting a job offer for such can earn you as much as 20 points.
Other factors can add between 5 to 10 points to your points test. These include: familiarity with a designated language, studying and living in regional Australia, partner skills, State/Territory government nomination, Designated Area sponsorship and more.
