As Australia’s pipeline of large projects is set to continue to grow, Australia is in need of skilled workers to deliver this work.

Moreover, with Australian sectors such as engineering, IT, tourism and hospitality, aged care, agriculture and construction continuing to struggle with damaging skill shortages, Australian employers are now finding it tough to recruit staff most especially in the mining states of Queensland and Western Australia which are the worst hit.

When these Australian businesses can’t fill a vacancy from the local labour market or through training, the most commonly used program for Australian or overseas employers in sponsoring overseas skilled workers to work in Australia temporarily is the 457 visa.

Also known as Temporary Business (Long Stay) – Standard Business Sponsorship (Subclass 457) Australian skilled visa, this type of Australia visa enables employers to nominate a number of positions for different occupations under the same sponsorship application.

Specifically, the 457 work visa program enables an Australian or overseas business to sponsor a skilled worker if they will not be able to find an appropriately skilled Australian citizen or permanent resident to fill a skilled position listed from either the Consolidated Sponsored Occupations List (CSOL) Schedule 1 & 2, prepared by the Australian Government to identify specific skill shortages in Australia.

To be able to apply for a subclass 457 skilled visa, you must: have relevant skills and been nominated by an approved business to work in an eligible occupation in Australia listed in CSOL; be working for the company for the first time or are being transferred from another position within the same company outside Australia or a representative of a supplier of services who is located outside Australia or recommended for entry by the Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs or a member of the family unit of a skilled worker who has been nominated for this visa; and meet other eligibility requirements applicable to all visa applicants.

The 457 visa have several requirements that must meet to be granted a visa. These include: being able to demonstrate minimum English language ability; have adequate health insurance for the period of stay in Australia; show genuine intention to perform the nominated occupation; and meet character and health checks together with a declaration concerning Australian values and laws.

The 457 skilled visa will enable the holder to work in Australia for a period of between one day and four years; may bring any eligible dependants with them who are given unrestricted work and study rights in Australia; and once in Australia, holders can travel in and out of Australia multiple times, with no limit on the number of times of travel.
