In fact, visa applications have gone up by almost 30 percent which are proving to be beneficial to the economy of Australia. This is seen in the nearly 2 million visa approvals for the period July-December 2012 which reflects a 5.8 percent increase compared to the same period of the previous year. Additionally, applications for Australian visitor visa or tourist visa in China have also increased by 16.5 percent. This means that visa applications are now at 194,204. As for Singapore, the applications for the visitor visa are now at 81,364 which is an increase of 28.7 percent. It was also noted that the number of visitor visa holders in Australia last December 2012 has reached 401,362 which has recorded an increase of 9.2 percent compared to 2011.

According to a spokesman of DIAC, the strong economy and the natural and cultural attractions of Australia are playing a significant role in attracting large numbers of tourists and holiday makers.

In terms of working holiday makers, it is United Kingdom that is the largest supplier to Australia and is followed by Taiwan. South Korea, Germany and France complete the list of the top 5 countries for working holiday maker visas.

United Kingdom has had 24,135 visa grants from July to December 2012 while Taiwan has had 17,969.

“We are making it easier than ever for tourists from the Asian region to visit Australia and contribute to our economic and cultural growth, with the progressive expansion of online lodgement this year. We need to be able to take advantage of the increased tourist markets, and our online visa lodgement system is part of our improved service for visitors,” said a DIAC spokesman.
