The Opening Salvo of Australia New Immigration Rules

June 27, 2011 – The opening salvo of the set of new and updated immigration rules that the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) has proposed will take effect this coming July 1, 2011. These new immigration visas Australian rules will create changes on the visas for Australia eligibility requirements.
The updated Skilled Occupation List (SOL) and new Points Test system for skilled migrants are just the first salvo of the new and updated rules proposed by DIAC in answer to Australia’s need for highly skilled workers who can provide the best in terms of economic benefit to Australia.
Both new immigration rules are set to revamp Australia’s skilled migration program as measures are made by the federal government to attract more skilled workers to Australia to fill up the shortage of qualified skilled workers brought about by the booming mining industry and to fill up critical skills needed by the country.


The Updated Skilled Occupation List (SOL)

The updated Skilled Occupation List (SOL) has added 13 occupations and removed four occupations to its current list. Designed to be responsive to economic conditions and deliver skills in need in Australia, the SOL is updated annually based on expert advice from the independent body, Skills Australia.
The SOL identifies specialized occupations of high value, which includes managerial, professional, associate-professional and trade occupation that are needed in Australia for that particular period.

The New Points Test system

Used to aid in the selection of the skilled migrants who can provide the best in terms of economic benefit to Australia, the new and updated Points Test system, one of the Australian visa requirements, is focused to strategically choose the best possible people whose skills set can fill up Australia’s critical skills requirement.
The points test creates a selection process awards points to the skills and attributes identified to be needed in Australia’s labor market.

Continuing Salvo

Next year, specifically on July 1, 2012, the Department of Immigration and Citizenship will continue to introduced another round of changes to its skilled migration program, the new Skilled Migrant Selection Model which make sure a match between the number of applicants and the number of available program places are made that will result in the selection of the best and brightest skilled migrants as well as streamlined visa from Australia processing times.
