Skilled Immigration is Needed by Australia – Finance Minister
Australia December 2, 2010 – Penny Wong, Finance Minister of Australia stated that Australia is in need of more skilled workers immigrating into the country to be able to meet the higher demand for skilled labor.
According to Wong, there is really a need for the increase of labor force as Australia is currently facing a whole new range of capacity constraints that they need to address right away.
It is a fact that Australia is facing different issues than most developed countries do since the 2008 global financial crisis ended. There is a continuous increase in the prices of houses. A need for new homes in major urban centers are also needed and this was caused by the high demand due to the incoming migrants. This event, in turn, created a need to hire more skilled workers so as to provide more workers that will work for the housing sector.
The country is expected to have a decrease in its unemployment, seen to drop by 4.7 percent by the second quarter of the coming year. This is the lowest unemployment rates that a developed country in the Western nation will ever have. As a result of this, there is a predicted increase in the skilled gaps which can be resolved through allowing more skilled workers to immigrate into the country.
The Australian Government has recently announced the changes that they have made in their skilled immigration points based system which is said to take effect in the coming summer of next year. The government is in effect going to make it more difficult to immigrate as a trades person. It is possible that this could have an adverse effect on the ability of the Australian businesses to meet the labor needs.
There has been a call from business leaders all over Australia urging the Australian government to reconsider and review their plans for skilled immigration.
According to Wong, the challenge during the last term was to avert recession and to challenge in this term to manage growth.
