Australia December 22, 2010 – Federal government has decided to lower down the entry requirements for overseas students who want to study in Australia and Australian universities welcomed this decision. This is in response to the buckling demand in the international education market.

The revision in entry requirements was announced by Chris Bowen, the Immigration Minister and Chris Evans, the Tertiary Education Minister. This includes the multi-billion-dollar Indian and Chinese markets. From three years’ worth of money to support the study of every student that studies in Australia, it now changes into two years requirements.

The system was initially tightened in February and private sector training colleges that cater the international market have collapsed. The changes or revisions have been overall approved to deal with a drop in application across the 18 billion dollar international education business. The tougher immigration restrictions established to stop students with poor English to use low-skill vocational courses as a fast track to permanent residency. It is also reported that even the universities dependent on foreign income has dried up.

A 25 percent drop in commencing overseas students is expected by the Central Queensland University. Almost half of total enrollments here are intentional students and expected to get high both next year and 2012.

Monash University which has been Australia’s largest international education provider announced 350 repetitions in response to a 30 percent drop in demand in its university preparation college and these are mostly from foreign students.

This fall-off is mainly because of the long application process periods and tight visa restrictions. This includes the requirements that needing potential students to prove they have about 100, 000 dollars to meet tuition fees and living expenses. These are the conclusions by both the training and university sectors. On the other hand, students from English-speaking countries generally require a quarter of that amount for entry requirement in Australia’s universities.
