Renters to be given a month’s grace from eviction
June 5, 2009 – Renters facing eviction in New South Wales will be give a “rent holiday.” They will have a month’s grace before they are evicted from their homes when banks repossess properties.
The attempt to give relief to renters will be put before the Parliament this week. The protection measures include a minimum 30-day notice for tenants to vacate properties of mortgages seeking vacant properties. Under the proposed law tenants will also be allowed to cease payment of rent once they are notified of mortgage default.
The amendments seek to fast-track release of rentals bonds. Renters will be provided with relocation expenses and have any advanced rent paid back to them.
“I want to put a stop to the nightmare of families having to pack their bags at the whim of the mortgagee,” said Fair Trading Minister Virginia Judge. “Through no fault of their own, their tenants can be served with a sheriff’s notice to vacate their home as soon as a repossession order is granted. We are talking about homes and lives, not just legal documents. This is the grim reality of the global recession.”
