Opera Australia has New Artistic Director
Australia, June 30, 2009 – Opera Australia has been assigned a new artistic director after a four-month international search. Lyndon Terracini, the CEO and artistic director of Major Brisbane Festivals, will take over the emptied position after the death of the controversial music director Richard Hicox last November.
In addition to the appointment of the new artistic director, there have also been a few initiatives geared towards internal restructuring.
“Opera Australia is a wonderful family. From time-to-time there are disagreements in families, and when I spoke to the entire company this morning I said to them that if there is a disagreement or if someone has an issue then please come and speak to me about it,” said Terracini.
Terracini has expressed that he wants to focus on cultivating new Australian work. He also says that he wants to explore the use of digital technology both on and off the stage.
“I think at the present time Australians are very keen to connect to the culture of this place, and I think audiences too are very aware that they want to be a part of the stories that we’re telling and they want to see those stories.”
Richard Wagner’s The Ring Cycle is among Terracini’s top choices for production.
