Australia, September 21, 2009 – Almost 200 agents operating in a number of countries from lodging student visa applications has been closed because of evidence of fraud or poor approval rates. In order to regain their access to the online system, agents will need to ‘show cause’ for their behaviour. Also, access arrangements are being revised to ensure that online agents meet high standards of performance.

The AAERI was established by the Australian Education International, the international arm of Australia’s education department. This move has been welcomed by the Association of Australian Education Representative in India (AAERI).

Mr Gulshan Kumar Pathania, President, AAERI, said, “We have been lobbying with the Australian Government to take action against the fraudulent agents in India, as well as to keep a check on the conduct of onshore agents in Australia and also their sub-agents in India.”

The AAERI has also been holding talks with the Australian Government on the need to strengthen student visa checks to stamp out fraud and ensure students have financial capacity to live and study in Australia.
