Nurses in Demand in Australia

To work in Australia, nurses need to be registered or enrolled by the nurse regulatory body in the State or Territory in which they want to work.
There are excellent career opportunities with permanent and temporary work available in Australia. Most work visas Australia applications for nurses receive priority processing.

In recent years, the most commonly used work visa in Australia for employers to sponsor overseas nurses to work in Australia on a temporary basis is the “Temporary Business (Long Stay) – Standard Business Sponsorship (Subclass 457) working visa for Australia”.
Approved business employers sponsor the nursing staff under the work visa for Australia Sub-class 457 for up to four years, which allows accompanying family members to be able to work and study in Australia — making this work visa to Australia the most common method of long-term employment for foreign nurses.

Employer Nomination Scheme. This is for overseas nurses under 45 years of age with qualifications and work experience as a registered nurse, may be eligible for a permanent working visa in Australia under this scheme. Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme. Under this scheme, Overseas nurses with qualifications equivalent to an Australian diploma level qualification (two years full-time study) or higher will be sponsored by an Australian employer to work and live in regional Australia.
To work in a hospital or other health care area, nurses need to pass a health examination which includes a chest x-ray.
However, if an overseas nurse is not sponsored either by an Australian employer or state or territory, there is a range of working Australia visa options under the Skilled Migration program for skilled workers who want to live in Australia and who do not have an employer sponsoring them, which include options for skilled people applying as an independent migrant as well as those sponsored by an eligible Australian relative or nominated by a state or territory government. To be eligible to apply for a skilled migration work visa Australian, nurses must pass a points test and meet a range of basic requirements.
Skilled migration Applicants must obtain skills assessment from the Australia Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC), Australia’s independent accreditation authority for nursing and midwifery, even if currently registered to work as a nurse in an Australian state or territory.
