New Car Sales Drop as Recession Continues

According to the recently released figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, Australians are either abandoning their cars or opting for cheaper alternatives. Sales for new vehicles declined 3.5 percent in February down to 73, 190 units from 75, 879 in January.

Year-on-year numbers are down by 18.6 percent. February is the 14 th consecutive month of sales decline. South Australia experienced the biggest drop in sales with a decrease of 9.7 percent compared to January. The Australian Capital Territory , on the other hand, is the only area to experience a gain in sales with an increase of 0.3 percent.

The bureau also reports that large four-wheel drive vehicles saw a 22 percent drop in sales.

Manufacturers are starting to speculate on how the drop in sales will affect employment and production. The Government, however, has already promised to inject $6.2 billion into the auto industry to improve the market and encourage the production of “green cars”
