New Australian immigration rules will benefit Indians
Australia July 13, 2011 – As Australia’s economy returns to its pre-global financial crisis levels of growth as well as the country’s booming resources, mining industries have necessitated in hiring an additional 260,000 workers over the next five years to staff new projects and to replace the country’s ageing workforce.
The expected increase in demand for manpower has caused the Australian government to make reforms to its Australian immigration policies.
The reformed Australian migration policy is aimed to ensure a match of demand for skills with availability of skills available from overseas.
Set to kick off last July 1, the newly reformed Australian migration program is hoped to draw more skilled Indian workers to the country to aid in meeting its labor shortage of skilled manpower in some sectors that have transcended the entire community.
According to David Holly, Consul-General for South India, the first phase of the fine-tuning in the Skilled Migration Policy, with the introduction of an updated Skilled Occupation List (SOL) which is said to address the ongoing changing needs of the Australian labor market, is advantageous to Indian skilled migrants.
Likewise, the raising of the age limit for unsponsored applicants with the required qualifications and experience from 45 to 50 as well as the recognizing of the recognized degrees from reputed colleges and universities outside Australia and overseas work experience is also being welcomed as beneficial to Indians.
According to Ravi Lochan Singh, MD of education consultancy Global Reach and president Association of Australian Education Representatives in India, the recognizing of the degrees from some Indian institutions by the Australian government is being welcomed by the Indians though the number from India is too small.
Likewise, Indian students would likely to become more attracted to Australia’s higher education programs.
With the implementation of the immigration Australia reforms, the new points test and the updated Skilled Occupations List (SOL), Indian students applying for Australia visa permanent residence applications will now be assessed on a much broader perspective as compared to the previously assessment of qualifications gained during their study in Australia.
