Melbourne Fast-Becoming Preferred Tourist Site
Melbourne, June 22, 2009 – While Sydney is still in the running as one of Australia’s top city for internationals visiting Australia, other Australian destinations are also increasingly being favored by visitors. In a recent global study on livability of 140 cities, Sydney came ninth. Melbourne, on the other hand, now ranks third.
Meanwhile, the magazine Monocle, ranks Sydney at number 13 – four places behind Melbourne. The magazine highlights the Melbourne’s “energy and positivity”.
Another index of visitor preference is Anholt-GfK’s index of city brands. For the pat two years, Sydney has taken the number one spot. This year however, it is down to second. The Australian city is still a leader in three of six categories for cleanliness, friendliness and accommodation.
To visit Australia’s beautiful cities, tourists must get a visitors visa for longer trips or an ETA for shorter trips. Visitors from Australia are up 3.5 percent from the same period last year, and up 16 percent month on month. The total number of visitors to Australia is now over 1 million for the 12 months to the end of May – hitting a record high this calendar year.
