Melbourne experiences chilliest April in 56 years

Melbourne, April 30 – The cold has reached its peak in Melbourne. At 2.9 degrees Celsius at 6:35am, it is recorded as the chilliest April morning in the last 56 years.

According to Weather Company meteorologist Brett Dutschke, the cold snap tested records across the city. Some suburbs even dropped below freezing. Most areas recorded their coldest April morning in decades. Some cities fell as much as 10 degrees below the monthly average.

Coldstream recorded the greater Melbourne area’s lowest temperature, with a frosty -2.7 degrees at 6:30am. Suburbs like Scoresby were at 0.3 degrees and Essendon 0.6 degrees.

South-west of Melbourne also experienced chilly weather with Laverton reaching 0.4. This is the city’s lowest April temperature for 66 years. Tullamarine struggled to just over a degree.

The first of May is expected to increase in temperature due to the increasing cloud and more wind. Dutschke believes the frosts would only hit east of Melbourne.
