Maldives Planning for Mass Australian Migration
January 19, 2012 – The Maldives is now planning for mass migration to Australia as a solution to rising sea levels.
Buying land in Australia as preparation for their mass migration to the aforementioned country, the Maldivian President,
Mohamed Nasheed, has finally decided to settle in Australia as the final destination for the mass migration of the 350,000
citizens of Maldives archipelago.

The Maldivian President stated that though his people obviously still want to remain on the islands, moving was a necessary eventuality his government had to plan for as the rising sea levels have forced the islands to be evacuated.
Prior to settling in Australia, the search for a new home for the citizens of Maldives was also focused in India and Sri Lanka due to cultural similarities but they had eventually settled in Australia. Once settled, President Nasheed had then set a sovereign savings account, which was said to be funded by the continuing revenue from tourism and was used to buy land on high ground because “he did not want his people living in tents for years, or decades, as refugees.”
Located in the Indian Ocean, the Maldives archipelago, since the 1970s, has become one of the most beautifully exotic tourist destinations in the world. Showcasing a biologically diverse ecosystem, as well as boasting of hundreds of uninhabited desert islands, the Maldives has seen a dramatic growth in tourism which became the Maldives’ biggest and most important source of income.
However, with almost 1,200 islands making up the island nation, not one is more than 6 feet above sea level. And approximately 80% of the 1,200 islands are less than 3 feet above sea level. The Maldives archipelago has become more threatened by the prospect of rising sea levels.
And with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change prediction of rising sea levels that will rise by as much as 23 inches in the next century, which would be catastrophic not just for the tourism industry but also for the country’s existence, the Maldivian population has found themselves in a drastic eventuality of having to eventually evacuate their country, becoming the first refugee victims of global warming.
The Maldivian people have been aware of this issue for a while and in 2009, their government had announced its intentions to become completely carbon neutral within a decade by completely switching to renewable energy sources.
