Australia, June 24, 2009 – Australia’s labour market continues to improve as jobs advertised on the internet show an increase. The ANZ national job ad series monitors advertisements in both newspapers and the internet. For January, it has noted that internet advertising has increased by 1.8% to 276,969, seasonally-adjusted.

This figure is 31.9% higher than the same period in 2007. The number of jobs advertised on the internet rose by 2.7% in the first month of 2008 to 257,830 up on January 2007 by 35.8% Tony Pearson, ANZ’s head of Australian economics said that overall data suggests that labour demand remains healthy. ”As a result, the current tight labour market conditions are expected to continue well into 2008,” he said.

”One of the stand out features of the Australian economy over the past six months is that economic growth and the demand for labour have remained robust despite a slowing global economy, continued financial market volatility, progressive increases in domestic interest rates and a persistently high Australian dollar. ‘The latest job advertisement figures suggest this healthy performance has continued in the early part of 2008.”

Advertising in both the internet and in newspaper are indicative of differences in demand for labour between regions across Australia.

”The trend data over the past few months suggest some easing in demand for labour in Western Australia, with continued solid demand in the Australian Capital Territory and the Northern Territory, says Pearson.
