How it feels to be a case manager?
February 15, 2011 – There are always two sides to every story when you’re working at the heart of the highly charged illegal migration debate and is a gross understatement.
According to a case manager at Villawood Immigration Detention Centre and who have worked for the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) since 2003, Mia Reyes, it can be very challenging to work in an arena where seemingly everyone has an opinion. She explained that as a public servant, you always have two clients and these are the client sitting in front of you and the Australian public and both are really hard to balance.
She also added that they can’t make any decisions like granting or renewing Australian business visas or work visa to Australia. They can just guide them into understanding of what their options are.
Being a case manager requires you to have a strong interpersonal skills and the ability to set appropriate professional boundaries between the clients and other stakeholders which also involves further balancing acts such as keeping a cool head while building rapport with clients. These also apply if you work in a company that offers an Australian visa online.
More case managers are needed by DIAC in response to the increase in irregular maritime arrivals. The department ensures and processes cases in a timely manner commensurate with departmental values. This role may be challenging at the same time rewarding as the opportunity enables you to build resilience and professional capacity. It also helps you develop strong friendships that typically come from working in a stressful working environment. As an additional bonus, you will have the chance to change lives in a positive way.
You will see how amazing the look on your clients’ faces when you hand a protection visa especially when you say, “You’re an Australian now”. It feels satisfying. Being a case manager sound idealistic but this job actually makes a difference for many people which can be obvious.
