According to the latest report from the Bureau of Resources and Energy Economics (BREE), Australia’s booming mining and resources sector is estimated to grow jobs and economic prosperity for the long-term as the new report reveals record investments in the mining and resource sectors totaling nearly $232 billion.

Figures researched by Pitcrew Consultants revealed that there is a high demand for construction jobs within the resources sector, which is expected to reach to 40,000 workers in the second half of this year and jumping to 60,000 by 2015.

Moreover, Queensland is currently experiencing construction skills shortages fuelled by its planned coal and gas developments, where the $80 billion in new resources projects will translate to 38,000 construction and operational jobs in the state’s resources sector between now and 2014, according to Queensland Mining Minister, Stirling Hinchlifee.

Meanwhile, mining giant BHP Billiton predicted that over the next five years, the Australian resources industry is forecasted to generate an extra 170,000 job. The booming mining and resources is expected to create 90,000 jobs in the industry by 2016, with the demand for temporary construction workers to peak at 80,000 in 2014.

Likewise, Western Australian Chamber of Minerals and Energy (CME) latest state growth outlook has predicted an additional 33,000 workers to be required over the next few years in the state’s resources sector with the majority of positions being skilled trades-people, engineers, and metallurgists.

CME CEO Reg Howard-Smith has reiterated a call for a flexible skilled working visa for Australia program. He stated that currently, Australia is facing a skills shortage and not a labor shortage.

Aside from its high demand, the mining industry also reported that there are higher wages than similar industries, with about 64% of companies expected to increase salaries from between 3-6%.

Furthermore, there is also a high demand for seasoned IT professionals, with more than 1000 IT new positions to fill in Canberra alone as the nation’s large public sector upgrades is gathering momentum and its IT industry braces itself for a serious skills shortage.

Moreover, the booming resources sector is also investing heavily in IT systems. This is now underpin every stage of the mining process, from design right through to the measurement of output.

The candidate short market in the IT industry has also driven up salaries. This is due to the fact that skills shortages begin to affect IT project delivery times.

Meanwhile, Australia’s health sector is also facing a worsening shortage of health professionals over the next 15 years as the country’s ageing health workforce begins to retire.

According to the General Secretary of the NSW Nurses Association, Brett Holmes, with the nursing profession already suffering from a serious skills shortage now, the state has predicted a shortfall of about 10,000 health professionals by 2028.
