High demand for workers in Australia
Australia, October 14, 2010 – Australia’s job market is in a boom resulting to the demand for more workers in the country. People are now beginning to wonder if the restrictions employed in order to decrease the immigration to Australia is a good decision.
In September, a certain increase in the number of people working in Australia has been recorded. The increase was said to be 2.5 times the estimate. The past two months have shown that the number of full-time employment has risen to 112,500 more. This is said to be the largest two-month increase since the last record in 1988.
Craig James, senior economist of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia has explained that if the country is to avoid inflation, more migrants should be allowed to come into the country to work. He further suggested that in order to restrain the wage pressures and keep the interest rates low, labor supply should be increased, which means more migrants into the country.
Recent events and figures may bring about second thoughts to Julia Gillard’s plans to limit immigration to Australia. Limiting the immigration has been her way of backing down on her predecessor’s plans to let the country’s population grow by more than a half in the next 40 years.
However, reports have indicated that with the increasing number of jobs, the number of foreigners migrating to Australia has also declined. A 25 per cent decrease in the Net Australian immigration has been recorded in the year to March 31.
The drastic fall in the number of immigration, according to James, is ‘certainly not a desirable outcome’.
With the development of events, it appears that the Australian government has to address the issue any time soon. What steps they will be taking is what everyone will be looking forward to in the coming days.
