Heavy Rains Cause Blackout
Australia, April1 – Sydney’s inner west area lost power at about 6:30am (AEDT) after being hit by heavy rains. Approximately 3,000 homes and businesses in Camperdown and Glebe experienced a power cutoff.
The problem is probably rooted to a transformer is the Camperdown subway station. Underground cable bays are also being checked. As of writing, power has not yet been restored to the said cities.
“This heavy driving rain we have seen overnight and this morning can sometimes lead to water in these cable bays, which can sometimes cause problems with the network, so that could be the cause,” said an Energy Australia representative earlier today.
Monday saw a similar incident with over 70,000 homes and business experiencing a blackout in Sydney CBD. The power failure shut down 140 sets of traffic lights causing heavy traffic build up in several areas. The three-hour blackout also caused performance cancellations in the Sydney Opera House. The chaotic incident also triggered a review of Sydney’s terrorism emergency warning system.
