Government to Inject $7M for Indigenous Education
Western Australia, August 19, 2009 – Education Minister Julia Gillard announced today that the Federal Government will inject more than $7 million into education projects. The focus will be on the Kimberly region of Western Australia. The funding aims to close the gap between indigenous and non-indigenous student literacy and numeracy levels.
More than 450 classrooms will benefit from the fund that will go the installation of sound amplification equipment. Western Australia government, Catholic and Aboriginal Independent Community School sectors will receive $1.3 million worth of equipment. Teachers will be trained to use these to manage hearing issues in the classroom.
The Associated Independent Schools of WA will also get $5 million for the construction and repair of houses for teachers working at Aboriginal Independent Community schools in remote parts of the state.
Finally, another $700,000 will go towards expanding the trial of the Kimberley Reading Recovery project. This amount is expected to increase the current number of schools from 12 to 17. Meanwhile, $190,000 will be spent on books for indigenous students.
