Extension of Australian Post study Work Visa Arrangements
December 8, 2011 – Starting on 2013, the post-study work visa in Australia arrangements will be extended.
The Australian government will soon implement the extension of its post-study work rights as part of its ongoing commitment to support the international education sector.
Aimed to make Australia more attractive for international students wanting to study overseas, Chris Evans, Minister for Tertiary Education, Skills, Jobs and Workplace Relations, and Chris Bowen, Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, announced last November 30 the extension of the post-study work rights that will include Bachelor or higher degree graduates from education providers accredited to offer degree level programs. This extension is part of the Australian government’s response to the Knight Review of the Student Visa program, particularly recommendations 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, 4.4 and 8.
According to the announcement, graduate degree holders who graduated after at least two academic years’ study in Australia will become eligible for Australia post-study work visa for Australia arrangements which will effect from 2013. This means that Bachelor and Masters by Coursework graduates who have spent at least two academic years studying that degree in Australia will receive two years post-study working visa in Australia rights.
This is in time for students who are applying for student visa Australia now.
Senator Evans also added that such an initiative on the work visa Australian will make Australia join other nations offering highly competitive education packages to foreign students. This will make Australia globally competitive by attracting those seeking to get quality and long-term education in Australia, regardless of their field of interest.
The new arrangements will also make Masters by Research graduates receive 3 years post-study work rights. This means that they will be eligible to stay in Australia for a period of three years under the post-study work visas Australia arrangement. PhD graduates will also receive four years post-study work rights. This means that they will be eligible to stay in the country for up to four years under this post-study working visa for Australia arrangement.
Currently, the Temporary Skilled – Graduate work visa to Australia (Subclass 485) is the usual route for over 80 percent of foreign students enrolled at the Bachelor degree level or above who want to stay in Australia after they graduate. This working Australia visa subclass allows successful overseas student applicants to stay in Australia for up to 18 months with work rights.
