Canberra Rail Trail Gets $13M Funding
Victoria, April 29 – Part of Victoria’s bushfire-affected area will be receiving funding from the $800 million community infrastructure stimulus. The Goulburn River High Country Rail Trail will be getting $13.2 million from the Federal Government.
The trail for recreational cyclists, walkers and horse riders follows the abandoned Mansfield railway line from Trawool to Yea, Molesworth, Cathkin, Alexandra, Bonnie Doon, Maindample to Mansfield.
The 134 kilometre trail is expected to cost $14.2 million. The funding will be used to repair and build bridges, road crossings, car parking, rest stops and other amenities. Once constructed, it is also expected to provide access for emergency and maintenance vehicles.
Building the trail will not only boost tourism in the region area, it is also expected to offer employment opportunities for local tradespeople, helping those affected by bushfire recover financially.
Anthony Albanese, Minister for Infrastructure and Local Government, already met the Murrindindi and Mitchell shires to discuss projects that would help bushfire recovery.
“They advised me that this project was about supporting local economies through tourism and building community spirit after the devastating bushfires,” says Albanese.
The councils that proposed the project will also contribute $1 million.
