Call center positions to be sent overseas

Australia, March 9, 2011 – The call center industry is among the strongest and most reliable employment provider today. All over the world, there are millions of call center jobs occupied by people. In fact, it has become an answer to the very high unemployment rates of the different countries worldwide. Since the job offers are overwhelming, these companies expand to countries especially in Asia.

In the next few months, it is expected that more call center jobs may be sent overseas after Telstra cancelled two Australian call center contracts. An estimated 700 Australian jobs may be lost. Although Telstra could not confirm yet the exact number of jobs to be filled in Australia, the company is considering offshore companies for the contracts. 163 workers in Salmat’s Geelong office in Victoria will lose their jobs. A statement on this was issued by the company confirming that their contract was discontinued and 742 positions will be vacated in the whole Australia unless the company finds another possible contract.

As of yesterday, company staff has not been told yet of the news. Possible applicants listed to take over the contracts are overseas companies.

The Head of Corporate Affairs of Salmat said that the contracts were discontinued not because of the performance of its workers but because of economic decisions by Telstra. “Calls handled by unsuccessful participants in this competitive process will be gradually wound down before moving to another specialist call centre provider,” was the statement of the Telstra spokesperson.

The call center industry of Australia may possibly take a few steps back with the recent decision of Telstra. But one thing remains the same. The Australian government will not sleep on the matter and will continue to find ways to provide its citizens the opportunities they deserve. Australia will continue to stand up amidst the many economic difficulties it faces.
