Better Health Infrastructure to be Expected in NSW
Australia, June 17, 2009 – Health Minister John Della Bosca plans on injecting more than $603 million to health infrastructure this year. Of that amount, 10 percent is expected to go to IT projects. Della Bosca says that the delivery of major IT initiatives to enhance patient services is a Government priority for the next four years.
Special Commissioner Peter Garling, in his review of the acute care sector, has ordered an upgrade to the IT systems across the state’s public hospitals before July 2011.
Della Bosca has allocated $63.1 million”to upgrade business information technology, including medical imaging and clinical systems across the state” for the period of 2009 to 2010.
Bulk of the budget will go to rebuilding hospitals and regional health centres.
Jobs in the industry are also expected to rise. The Government plans to employ 500 clinical support officers, at a cost of $44 million per year. An additional 64 new clinical pharmacists will also be employed to improve patient safety by monitoring medication use. This is estimated to cost the Government $8.6 million. To improve communications with patients and their families in the emergency department and to ensure x-rays are readily available, 30 new clinical initiative nurses will be employed.
As part of it continued commitment to e-health, NSW “will invest $35.7 million over the next three years to the National E-Health Transition Authority”; with an allocation of $9.4 million this year.
