Australia January 12, 2010 – Australia is now being pressured to speed up skilled migrant applications as these results backlogs on immigration. It is reported that more than 140, 000 skilled workers coming from different countries who hope to migrate in Australia are caught up under this departmental backlog since two years ago.

Last year, Chris Bowen, the Australia’s Immigration minister had been informed already about this backlog issue in a confidential briefing with Australia’s Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) but the details of that briefing have only just been made public by the department.

Many businessmen have criticized this backlog and believed that through speeding up the visa application process, it will not just help skilled workers to have jobs they dream for but also this could lead to a better economy to Australia – so skilled migrants need to increase in order to fill in the job vacancies in most of the Australian companies who seek relevant or prospective skilled workers.

Shortage of workers in many sectors has been one of the problems of Australia after fast recovering from the economic downfall suffered worldwide. This includes the need on engineering, construction and health care industry and a consequent risk of inflated wages.

The Director of the Reserve Bank of Australia, Graham Kraehe told the Australian that skills shortages can be a major economic problem if the government does not increase the amount of skilled migration. This could also lead to some real pressure on wages as this shortage really affects Australia’s economy.

He said that Australia is facing two critical things that need considerations. First, the Australian Immigration should take into considerations ways to improve productivity. In the last three or four years, the country obviously has been poor and declining in productivity. Secondly, they should put emphasis on increasing skilled migration quotas. Through this, a shortage of skilled works can be easily addressed and so on project costs that will surely put pressure on wages cost in the community.
