Australians to Pay Travel Tax in UK
Australian travellers to the UK under an student or work visa may soon have to pay migrant tax. The Minister is expected to announce the details of the fee within the week.
The levy is expected to be as high as £50 (AUD$106) for applicants outside the European Union. The earnings from the travel tax is slated to go to local areas struggling with the impact of immigration on schools, doctors’ surgeries and other public services.
“This fund will pay for the public services in the areas where migration has the biggest impact on our local communities,” says Communities secretary Hazel Blears.
