Australian Visa Compliance Hits 99 percent Increase
November 9, 2011 - According to Australia’s the Department of Immigration and Citizenship Annual Report 2010-11, a greater number of visitors to Australia on ETA Australia visas are abiding by visa conditions. Visitors to Australia on working holiday and ETA visas have recorded a higher rate of visa compliance in 2010-11.
“The percentage of visitor visa holders who abide by their visa conditions increased in 2010-11 to 99.3 percent, compared to 95.3 percent in 2009-10. These figures demonstrate that the vast majority of people granted visitor visas have been correctly assessed as genuine visitors,” said the DIAC annual report 2010-11.
Meanwhile, the same report also showed that there is an increase in Australian 457 visas to employ overseas IT workers. Subclass 457 visas are temporary visas that allow foreign workers to stay and work in the country for up to four years.
Emerging skills shortages, posing a risk to business growth in some parts of the Australian economy, have increased demand. Many IT businesses experienced a major increase in the number of employees on 457 visas last year. There was a 117.6 percent increase in the number of visas granted to IT business analysts and a 38.6 percent increase in software engineers.
Demand for employer-sponsored permanent jobs dropped in the same period, with applications down more than 10 percent. It is interesting to note that permanent employer-sponsored jobs pay much less, offering about $20,000 less than the average base salary of $86,800 for a temporary 457 visa holder.
