Australian Student Visa Now Requires Confirmation of Enrolment
November 14, 2011 – Foreign student applicants for an Australian student visa are now required to submit proof of enrolment!
According to the Australian High Commissioner to India, Peter Varghese, starting Nov. 5 of this year, Australia student visa applicants are now required to submit a confirmation of enrolment (COE) issued by their intended education provider, as part of their Australian visa for students applications.
This proof of enrolment in a course in Australia is intended to improve processing time of the Australian visas for students as overseas student applicants are not required to wait anymore for a Pre-Visa Assessment (PVA) letter to be issued by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) before arranging their COE.
These recent changes in students’ visa laws for students who are intending for immigration to Australia is part of stage one of the Australian government’s response to the Knight Review of the student visa program that commenced last November 5, 2011. Mr. Knight’s report, the Strategic Review of the Student Visa Program 2011, contains 41 recommendations and is intended to help enhance the quality, integrity and competitiveness of the student visa program.
Commissioner Varghese welcomed the changes and further stated that these changes will strengthen Australia’s reputation as a quality education destination.
Meanwhile, starting Nov. 5, together with the implementation of the COE, a new ‘genuine temporary entrant’ (GTE) criterion was also implemented.
The new criterion is intended to provide assistance to the Australia immigration in ensuring that overseas students’ applicants “are intending a temporary stay only for the purposes of their education.”
In most cases, a GTE will be assessed through an interview and the student’s background and the value of the course to their future is also considered.
Changes along the possible reduction of the financial requirements for Assessment Level 3 and 4 students are also being made. This reduction in the period of funds to be shown upfront with a visa application is aimed to make getting an Australian student visa more competitive with other popular study destinations.
