Australian Government Crackdown on Employers of Illegal Immigrants

August 10, 2011 – With up to 100,000 immigrants working without proper travel visas to Australia, the Australian federal government is planning to deepen its crackdown on illegal workers.

Just recently, the Australian federal government has announced that it is planning a very huge crackdown on the illegal foreign workers who are here in the country without having proper Australia visiting visa by imposing heavy fines and infringement notices to the employers who are found to be employing foreign workers who do not have proper travel visa Australia.
A fine of about $10,000 for each illegal migrant employee found to be without proper Australia visiting visa will be charged to employers under the new rules while other penalties will also be charged under civil law.
Until now, the current law only deports the workers without travel visas Australia and at times not taking legal action as well as never taking any legal actions on the employers hiring them.
Immigration Minister Chris Bowen said that the current law does not carry enough force to successfully prosecute the rogue employers while the workers who have the best chance to provide case against their former rogue bosses have already deported before any legal actions began.
Minister Bowen explained that the current law does not provide a disincentive to hire illegal workers and many of these rogue employers just laugh at the sanctions involved. They just do not take the sanctions seriously as they know that it is very difficult or impossible to prosecute them, while launching prosecutions has become impractical and in effect impossible.
The crackdown has been initiated subsequent to a report authored by Stephen Howells, an independent legal expert and will entail adopting recommendations made by him.
According to the report, evidence has been found that the practice of employing illegal workers has been closely associated with sexual exploitation of vulnerable individuals, unsafe work practices and the growing number of illegal workers with organized crime groups and the encouragement of welfare fraud.
The tougher new sanctions will apply to those found to be employing two or more illegal workers.
