Moreover, 75% of Australians stated when asked that they were satisfied with their lives, higher than the OECD average of 59%.

According to the latest list of all countries by Human Development Index as included in a United Nations Development Programme’s Human Development Report, Australia has ranked as the second-highest human development index globally released on 2 November 2011 and compiled on the basis of estimates for 2011.

The Human Development Index (HDI) is a comparative measure of life expectancy, literacy, education, and standards of living for countries worldwide. It is a standard means of measuring well-being, especially child welfare. It is used to distinguish whether the country is a developed, a developing, or an under-developed country, and also to measure the impact of economic policies on quality of life. It covers 185 member states of the United Nations (out of 193), along with Hong Kong (of the People’s Republic of China), and the Palestinian territories.

Likewise, according to the latest Worldwide Quality of Living Survey from Mercer, six of Australia’s cities have secured a spot in the world’s top 50 of the most livable cities.

The 2011 analysis of 221 cities by Mercer Human Resource Consulting is based on an evaluation of 39 qualities of living criteria including political, social, economic and environmental factors, personal safety and health, education, transport and other public services.

With the records, Australia ranks highly in many international comparisons of national performance, such as quality of life, health, education, economic freedom, and the protection of civil liberties and political rights.
