Australia Maintains Again the Record of High Immigration Levels
January 17, 2012 – Good news for those interested in applying for work visas for Australia!
Despite the mounting concerns on urban congestion and the impact on young job seekers, the Rudd Government is set in maintaining a record high in immigration levels.

According to a new Immigration Department report on skilled visas Australian arrivals, the Federal Government wants to bring in up to 230,000 migrants on visa of Australia annually over the next 40 years as it plans to maintain record high immigration levels. This number is about the same as last year’s record intake, even though it was cut down by 18,000 places amid the global recession brought by the Global Financial Crisis (GFC).
One should take note that the Australian Capital Territory home of Australia’s capital city and the nation’s smallest state/territory has maintained a high level of immigration during the 2009-10 fiscal years. And each year in the last two years, there were more than 1850 people who have chosen to immigrate to Canberra. Moreover, there were 5.9 million visitor arrivals on tourist visa to Australia during the year ended November 2011, an increase of 0.4 per cent relative to the previous year and 520,100 visitor arrivals on Australia visitors visa during November 2011 alone, an increase of 0.6 per cent relative to the same month of the previous year.
As stated in the government issues paper, Select Skills: Principles for a New Migration Occupations in Demand List, there is a need for Australia to maintain an annual migration intake of between 150,000 and 230,000 people, partly to deal with the ageing of the country’s workforce. The government issues paper explained that within the framework, it is important to choose skilled migrants applying for visas to Australia to be not only young and healthy, but also to have a high level of education, language, and skills.
However, concerns on the negative impact on Australian young job-seekers were raised as according to Monash University demographer, Dr Bob Birrell, the latest data showed that there are many young Australians who are losing jobs as many migrants on visas Australian streamed in.
Dr. Birrell stated that a drop from 100,000 to 1,818,000 was revealed in the number of employed 15 to 24-year-old in the year to July. He further said that though the young people were the ones who felt the real brunt of the fall in jobs, the Federal Government is still barreling on with its big migration numbers.
Dr Birrell said that through better training and smarter work practices, Australia could still deal with its ageing workforce problem.
Meanwhile, Victorians have revealed their growing concerns about the high migration, which was revealed in a report on a major poll taken after the latest federal election. Data show that more than 40 per cent of Victorians want migration numbers to be cut which is believed to be due to their rising concern about jobs, urban congestion, and water shortages.
This number was way above the 27 per cent who wanted a reduction during a 2004 survey.
