Australia Experiences a Sharp Decline in Indian Student Immigration

Australia, April 5, 2011 – Peter Varghese, Australian Higher Commissioner to India, said that Australia has observed a sharp decline in student immigration from India. He stated that this is due to Australian authorities having a tougher student immigration qualification for Indian students. He also mentioned that the sharp drop in student immigration is not due to poor publicity and the ensuing assaults on Indian college students.

According to Commissioner Peter Varghese, there is a large decrease of the number of Indian college students migration in Australia but these should not be linked to the attacks. He stressed that the subsequent attacks on Indian college students has never been connected to the sharp drop in immigration of Indian students to Australia. He mentioned that this reduction in immigration is however because of the changes within the Australian immigration policies. Australia immigration policies have undergone stricter changes resulting to lesser students qualifying for immigration to Australia. It is now more difficult to obtain Australian visa for Indian college students for immigration to Australia.

He also mentioned that under the Basic Experienced Migration, overseas college students taking non-degree programs are no longer allowed anymore to long lasting residence. This reason also has contributed to the sharp decline of Indian student immigration to Australia.

Varghese also stated that the reduction of the immigration of Indian students might be as low as 80% compared to earlier this year.

According to Commissioner Varghese, in these few months, there has been some poor publicity about the attacks of some Indian students studying in Australia. It has been reported that a number of these attacks has been already described as being racially motivated.

Subsequent to these violent incidents, a sharp drop in students wanting to immigrate to Australia was noted. This is maybe due to Indian college students feeling safer to review and study elsewhere rather than in Australia where these attacks are happening.
