Australia balances immigration future

October 25, 2010 Australia – The recent results of the elections in Sweden prompted German chancellor Angela Merkel to state that multiculturalism has failed Germany. The said elections ended with as many as 20 Sweden Democrats winning parliamentary seats. The recent results have put a significant dent for the first time ever in mainstream Swedish politics. These unfolding of events have once again put the limelight to how hot the topic of immigration is in most western democracies. This brings the question then to how Australia is doing in terms of immigration.

The Australian Bureau of statistics showed that the past year has recorded a 64 per cent of net immigration contributing to population growth while a 36 per cent from the natural growth. The fast five years has already witnessed a considerable rise in immigration due to the government policy. This has then lead to the discussion of immigration in conjunction with increasing population in the recently held elections. Some wonders if the population growth is going to be an issue if it was due to natural increase rather than the cause of immigration.

Australia’s per capita income has risen in the recent years despite the huge influx of immigrants. After the country ranked second on the UN’s Human Development Index, questions abound regarding the relationship of the new members and the old ones.

Every country has the right to choose who they want to welcome in their country and for this, extra care should be exercised. A suggestion is that the government makes a thorough assessment of the possible immigrants. Aside from the skills, how they feel about the value system in the country should be established. Should a conflict in cultural interest or something else is found, then immigrating should be discouraged for this may cause alienation and disappointment.

These are some of the measures that can be applied to ensure that immigration is going to work for the best of both the country and the immigrants. As they say, Australia may not be a perfect country but it certainly is one of the best places to live in. One is free to do whatever s/he wishes, wear the clothes that they like, and speak out their minds freely. It is not good for Australia to discourage immigration for this means denying the country with some of the best minds out there. As such, a proper management of its immigration policy should be implemented.
