Asylum seekers detained in a motel
May 12, 2010, Australia – Recent news that Small Business Minister Craig Emerson told Sky News regarding the situation about the asylum seekers that they found, they said that they will not put them behind razor wire. Instead the federal government have defended the decisions to take the 79 asylum seekers to stay in a four star Queensland motel. Indeed they are detained but in a much proper room also to keep away from danger their children.
The Palms Motel in suburban Brisbane is the place that has chosen to accommodate the asylum seekers, giving them $1.2 million government contract. They must provide their room for at least six months to the group. According to Nine Network they employed private security guard to guard and protect the group.
“These are very vulnerable families with children and it’s something that needs to be done on a short-term basis,” Dr Emerson said. However according to Opposition immigration spokesman Scott Morrison this practice is quite not new, just because all the detentions are full and that is why the groups stayed in a motel.
According to the statement of Morrison the government’s asylum-seeker policy was out of control and adding that 16 boats had arrived since Labor publicized it was suspending new claims by Sri Lankan and Afghan boat arrivals.
