A Safer Study in Australia for International Students

January 20, 2010 – The research commissioned by the Australian Government about the latest overseas student satisfaction survey reveals international students feel safer in Australia than they did four years ago. On the contrary, foreign students are less satisfied with job opportunities and cost of living in the country.

As seen on the research done, there are 86 percent of the more than 50,000 foreign students have said that they were satisfied with their safety and overall living experience in Australia. International enrolments for the first semester are down with 20 per cent despite this high satisfaction rating.
There has been range of factors that obviously concern about students safety and this has caused a big impact in the Indian market. Another issue is the changes in migration which have also been fed into the market. Whilst in China, the concern has been the closures of some colleges and the stability of Australian sector.

It is said that the drop in enrolments is directly related to the Australian government’s adjustment to the student visa program and other Australian visa requirements which have been tightened by the government. The revised student visa program have made it extremely difficult for students to understand how it works or have any sense of security about whether it may change on them during their study timing in the country.
What was pointed out is that ‘safety’ is not the major concern but also the quality of education, value for money and employment outcomes. There are many reasons why some students couldn’t find suitable jobs after taking masters such as wrong color, name, background and accent – being a racist. This process of discrimination should be removed or else it’s going to be difficult for some nationalities to find job.

International students are struggling to get jobs in their qualification in their profession because of the English language problems. English language standards are given for students to have a much better opportunity to get professional work when they graduate.

Tony Pollock of IDP Education says that there is an emerging recognition that the skilled and professional labour needs of Australia will have to be met by international student graduates. Of course, each job requires for a fresh graduated student to possess work visa to Australia.
Australia’s international education industry is the country’s most lucrative services export with worth more than $18 billion annually. This also increases the ratio of those international students who apply for visas to Australia initially Australia visitor’s visa to take chance. Another survey will be conducted in 2012 to monitor updates with the industry.
