A Hike in Australian Student Visa Requests Seen in India

Australia July 4, 2011 – In the milieu of stricter Australia visa policies and security concerns of international students in Australia, a hike in international students who want to study in Australia is being seen.

An increase in Australian student visa request particularly from Indian students was being observed for the first half of this year 2011.

Following a distressing couple of years, where Indian students in Melbourne and Sydney were assaulted in 2009 and 2010, the number of Indian students applying for Australia student visa is beginning to rise.

In the previous couple of years, the number Indian students coming to Australia have plunged as several assaults were made against Indian students and the issue was blown out of proportion by an aggressive Indian media and aggravated by a rising dollar, which have made less attractive and affordable for Indian students.

As the issue of the attacks on Indian students faded, the Australian high commission in Delhi has observed a jumped of 21 percent in the number of applications for student visas in the first six months of 2011, with student visa applications reaching to more than 3700.

As the number of student visa applications is significantly springing back, the reported hike in student visa applications has yet to be seen in the educational institutions as the latest data reveals that a decline of 30 percent in the number of Indian students who have enrolled at the end of March was being observed as compared with the previous year.

The ongoing hike in student visa applications is said to reveal that India has forgiven the issue of the previous couple of years’ assault on Indian students as Indians are becoming optimistic over Australia.

The Australian federal government has recently started its skilled migration drive in India, with reforms expecting to boost the number of Indians who wants to migrate to Australia to live.

With more than 15,000 permanent skilled migrants last financial year, India continues to be the third-largest provider of permanent skilled migrants to Australia, behind only to China and Britain.
