1.3M Workers to be affected by Minimum Wage Decision

Australia, July 7, 2009 -The minimum wage decision still pending with the Fair Pay Commission is expected to impact 1.3 million low-paid workers. ACTU is calling for an increase that lift workers’ pay from $14.31 an hour.

The Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry disagrees with ACTU citing the uncertainty around the economy as a reason for holding the increase. ACTU, on the other hand, argues that wages were a “vital defence” against the downturn.

The Federal Government softened its stand in its post-budget submission. “Given that weakness in aggregate demand is currently the primary constraint on demand for labour, a reduction in the real minimum wage is unlikely to be effective in stimulating employment,” said the Government’s submission.

The decision is expected to be released by today. It will be the final one by the Fair Pay Commission before its role is transferred to become part of Fair Work Australia.
