Australian citizenship application: Documents and requirements

  • Sharebar

Australian citizenship is a great privilege for migrants who are permanent residents in Australia. Being a genuine citizen gives you many advantages, which come with equal responsibilities for becoming a committed member of the Australian community. However, before you can be an Australian citizen, you have to make an Australian citizenship application.

Application for Australian citizenship can be considered a complicated process that needs professional representation. However, you can make the process faster by preparing the necessary documents for your situation available at hand.

Types of documents

There are generally three types of documents you need to prepare for a citizenship application: proof of identity, proof of good character, and supporting documents.

Identity documents are those that show the applicant’s photograph, signature, current residential address, gender, birth name, and birth date. For applicants who changed their names, a proof of change of name is required. In some cases, an identity declaration from a person of authority. Applicants also need to provide evidence of arrival in Australia.

Good character documents show an applicant’s enduring moral qualities that suggest his or her likelihood to obey Australia’s laws and to live by the commitments through the Australian Citizenship Pledge. Most applicants need to submit an approved National Police Checking Service (NPCS) Application/Consent Form. Police clearance certificates may be required in some cases.

Sometimes, applicants may need to provide supporting documents in addition to proofof identity and good character. Three common situations when this type of document is required are (1) when the applicant wants be exempted from the residence requirement; (2) when the applicant is requested to evidence that his or her parent was an Australian citizen; (3) and when the applicant is required to provide evidence of a name change.

Completing these documents is a complicated process, so assistance from National Visas migration agents can relieve the confusion from having to identify which documents you need to provide for your situation. In a nutshell, documents may differ if:

  • you are applying onshore or offshore (overseas)
  • you are a New Zealand citizen
  • you are applying for citizenship by descent, by adoption, or by being born to an Australian citizen
  • you are resuming or renouncing your Australian citizenship
  • you are a British subject without evidence of entry to Australia and you arrived before 1 January 1975

Application process

The Department of Immigration outlines the overall process of applying for Australian citizenship in 10 steps. This 10-step process involves:

  • determining eligibility
  • meeting residence requirements
  • preparing for test or interview
  • gathering original documents
  • completing the application form
  • lodging the application
  • attending the citizenship appointment
  • taking the citizenship test
  • receiving notification of decision
  • attending a citizenship ceremony

However, as with visa applications, many things can go wrong between these processes. Migration agents are aware of the frustration the above outlined steps gives to applicants who handle the application themselves. National Visas migration agents are able to make it an easier experience in obtaining Australian citizenship.

Other considerations

Adding to the complexity of the Australian citizenship application is the specific requirements or options for certain situations. Among these are the following:

  • Applicants must provide a translated copy of documents in foreign language; translated versions must come from the National Accreditation Authority of Translators and Interpreters.
  • Some applicants may be eligible to lodge their applications online.
  • If original copies of documents are unavailable, certified copies that contain the necessary information may suffice.
  • Documents that need to be obtained from overseas have to be prepared in advance to avoid delays in processing. A document checklist for each type of citizenship application is available online or from a registered migration agent.
  • Documents for children under 16 are the same for those of an adult.
