Australian Visa: Superyacht Crew

  • Sharebar

One of three air and sea crew visas for Australia, the Superyacht Crew Visa (Subclass 488) allows the holder to enter Australia and work in a Superyacht. This means any ship or motor vessel with 24 meters or more in load line length, not carrying cargo and is used for sport or pleasure.

This Australian visa requires sponsorship. The applicant must be sponsored to work in Australia by the captain or owner of the Superyacht. If the visa holder changes employment, he or she needs to lodge a new application for an Australian visa. However, if visa holder transfers to another superyacht of the same owner, then there is no need to apply for another Australian visa.

The visa applicant must provide details of the vessel operator as well as the essential employment documents as part of the visa application. This includes the signed employment contract or agreement between the applicant and the captain or owner of the yacht or his or her agent. The contract must confirm employment, conditions and dismissal terms. If the letter is issued by the captain, the owner must confirm the captain’s employment. The superyacht’s vessel registration must also be provided as well as the copy of it’s insurance or ship survey.

Other eligibility requirements for this Australian visa also apply. It includes character and penal clearance requirement and health requirements.

This Australian visa is not applicable to partners or dependent children of Superyacht crew members. Family members who wish to join the visa holder may apply for either an Australian ETA visa or a Tourist Visa.

Once granted, the Superyacht Crew Visa would allow the holder multiple entries to the country within the 12-month validity of the Australian visa. This also allows the holder to work on board a Superyacht while in Australia for the support of operational requirements.
