Like doctors and other medical practitioners, nurses are also in high demand in Australia. There are opportunities for both permanent and temporary work in the country. Whether you are an experienced RN with high skill levels or you hope to gain additional occupational knowledge, there’s an Australian visa to suit you. Most Australia visa applications for nurses even receive priority processing.

To be able to work as a nurse in Australia, you must pass the health eligibility requirements, which includes a chest x-ray. Nurses planning to work in Australia must also be registered in a State or Territory regulatory body.

Nurses who will be sponsored by an employer can apply for a Temporary Business (Long Stay) visa or subclass 457, which will allow them up to four years in Australia. Those aged between 18 and 30, may opt for an Working Holiday visa. This allows for 12 months of stay in Australia, where you can work as a nurse for an one employer for a period of six months. Work in Australia must be incidental to holidays.

For nurses seeking to improve their skills bridging programs and temporary Australian visas are available through the Occupational Training Visa and the Business (Short Stay) visa or subclass 456. The type of visa to apply for is dependent on the expected length of the training program.
