Actors, directors, producers and people in the entertainment industry who wish to see the sights in Australia and take on temporary work may do so with Australian visa subclass 420. This temporary Australia visa is for those wishing to undertake work in film, television or live production. The applicant may hold roles either in the performance area or behind-the scenes.
In most cases, this visa for Australia requires sponsorship. The sponsorship and visa application must be lodged together. The applicant should send his/her visa application directly to the sponsor, who will then lodge both applications to the department. Sponsorship is not a requirement if the applicant is entering Australia under a country-to-country agreement.
If the applicant wishes to be involved in film or television production, he or she must secure a certificate from the Department of Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts. The application must be supported by the Arts minister confirming that relevant Australian content criteria have been met.
Additionally, the Australian visa applicant must contact the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service ahead of the scheduled production for details of his or her instruments, costumes and other equipment.
This Australian visa allows the applicant to work in the position nominated in the Australia visa application and only for a limited amount of time. Visa holders may bring family members with them to Australia. Birth and marriage certificates are required for partners, partner’s dependent children, the applicant’s children and other dependent relatives.
Eligibility requirements are dependent on the type of role the applicant will play in the production. For instance, a performer for a film or television production must play a leading, major supporting or cameo role. He or she must also satisfy ethnic or other special requirements of the production.
