Australian Visa: Doctors

  • Sharebar

Doctors are in high demand in the regional areas of Australia. Doctors can apply for either a temporary or a permanent Australian visa if they have obtained their primary medical qualification in another country. If the general practitioner or the specialist has gained his or her medical qualification, they may still be eligible to for an Australian visa if they are not a permanent Australian resident.

There are a number of Australian visa options available to doctors. Temporary Australian visas are for those who have not yet acquired full medical registration in Australia. If they are to be sponsored by an employers, the most suitable visa to apply for is the Temporary (Long Stay) visa or subclass 457. This offers both the employer and the doctor a special online application form. The employer only needs one sponsorship agreement to be able to sponsor several doctors and staff members.

The Medical Practitioner (Temporary) visa or subclass 422 is another available Australian visa option for doctors who wish to register to work in Australia. Under this visa category, the employer must lodge a separate application per doctor sponsored.

For doctors who intend to visit Australia in order to undertake a supervised training program, they must apply for an Occupational Trainee visa. This is a visa that allows stays of up to 12 months. This Australian visa type also requires nomination from an organisation that provides occupational training.

At the end of the training period, the Australian visa holder of an Occupational Trainee visa will be eligible to apply for the Skilled-Regional Sponsored (Provisional) visa or subclass 487.

For doctors who already hold full medical registration, they may apply for permanent residence. This can be done under the Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 856), the Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (subclass 857), Labour Agreements and through General Skilled Migration. Subclasses 856 and 857 both require employee sponsorships.

Doctors who want to practice in Australia must be registered with the Medical Board or the State or Territory where they wish to practice. Additionally, after the Australian visa has been granted, they must also apply to Medicare Australia for a Medicare Provider Number. This will allow them to work in general practice and prescribe drugs in Australia.
